Newsletter Edition 2, 2018 Print

President's Report

by Miranda Jernigan, CPM®, ARM®

I hope that this message finds you enjoying the warm weather and all of the wonderful activities that Northern Virginia has to offer in the summer!

Last month, I had the pleasure of attending the IREM Super Regional Conference held in Boston and really enjoyed getting to know some of the new staff working at IREM Headquarters. Their presentations were dynamic and their strong vision for the future of IREM is exciting!

Your chapter leadership and committee chairs have been working hard to ensure that we are meeting the goals set for 2018 and serving our members well. There are many events highlighted in the newsletter that have already been enjoyed this year.

Your feedback is one of the most valuable tools we have to shape our growth, and I invite you to share any ideas you might have by emailing me directly at mjernigan@kettler.com. I would love to hear any suggestions on what we could do better--or comments on what we do right-as we hit our mid-year mark.

April General Membership Meeting

Local security expert Joe Donovan, from Beacon Capital, joined us in April to discuss cyber security risks in buildings. He shared the latest information from government agencies and gave us steps to prevent security breaches that endanger our companies and tenants as well as threaten national security.

Congratulations to our April ARM® installee Lindsay Adams, ARM® of the Marque at Heritage Hunt.

May General Membership Meeting

The snowstorm in March didn’t get us down! We rescheduled our speaker, Virginia House of Delegates member Marcus Simon (53rd District-Falls Church and Fairfax County), for May 8 at Maggiano’s Little Italy. Delegate Simon brought us the latest news on the budget process from Richmond and touched on the metro funding bill. Our very own Debbie Santano of Brandywine Realty Trust moderated as attendees learned about the legislative process on the state level.

In May, new ARM® member Dawn Webster of Legend Management was installed and welcomed as a new member of the chapter.

2018 Gala

The 13th Annual IREM Gala, sponsored by IREM DC, IREM NOVA, and IREM West-Central MD, was held on Friday, May 18th at Congressional Country Club. Despite the rain, this was another glamorous evening filled with good food, good drinks, and good company.  We danced the night away to the talented band, Millennium, with 325 members and guests in attendance.

In the past twelve years, we have given an unbelievable $586,000 to Special Love For Children With Cancer. This year, we were able to present them with a check for $82,000, bringing our all-time total to $668,000!

At the event, we were pleased to welcome IREM’s 2018 National President Don Wilkerson, CPM®, as well as IREM CEO and Executive Vice President Denise LeDuc-Froemming.

June Candidate Event & General Membership Meeting

Our June General Membership Meeting eased us into summer with former IREM national president, Tony Smith, at Wildfire. He inspired our attendees with the story of how he got into property management and how his involvement in IREM on the local and national level spurred his career and ultimately resulted in fulfillment.

Just prior to the general membership meeting, the chapter held its annual Candidate Event, with guest speaker Lizzie Ortolano, Director of Member Services at IREM HQ. Almost 30 CPM Candidates and potential Candidates learned about the path to CPM membership, including hearing first-hand experiences from some of our own newly installed CPM members.

In June, we were proud to install new ARM® member Tamika Jones, of Bozzuto Management.

IREM 77 Red, White and Bluau

At the 2018 annual Summer Party, Industry Partners and chapter members spent the evening sharing unique experiences, which included caricature portraits, donut cheers, whiskey tastings, and more. With the help of all in attendance, the chapter was able to make a sizeable donation to The Warrior Project. Thank you to all who were able to make it out!

IREM's 30 Under 30

Exceptional next-generation leaders from four different countries who are committed to IREM and the real estate management industry have been recognized by IREM as its 2018 class of 30 Under 30. Coming from 30 different companies and managing all types of properties, these young professionals have made notable contributions to the industry and are being recognized for their career success thus far, as well as their leadership and community involvement.

One of our own from Chapter 77 is recognized and you may remember he was the Member Spotlight in our last quarterly newsletter. Congratulations Neil!

“It gives me happiness knowing my hard work is recognized and appreciated by the Institute of Real Estate Management. To me, the most exciting aspects of property management are the professional relationships and learning something new each day.”

Legislative Update

U.S. Supreme Court Brings Parity to Sales Tax Treatment

The United States Supreme Court issued a ruling allowing states to require remote retailers to collect sales tax on purchases. IREM supports this decision to level the playing field by treating online and brick-and-mortar retailers equally, which has long been one of IREM’s priority issues.

In a 5-4 decision, the Court overturned the 1992 Quill Corporation v. North Dakota ruling that barred states from requiring a business to collect sales tax if the business did not have a physical presence in the state. However, the Quill decision did more harm to brick-and-mortar stores and state and local governments than could have been anticipated at the time.

IREM applauds the Court’s actions to bring parity to the millions of businesses that will no longer be forced to compete on uneven ground. IREM has taken this issue to Congress in past Capitol Hill days, and most recently, submitted an amicus curiae (friend of the court) brief supporting this decision.
