Outgoing President's Message

by Kasara Smith, CPM®

I am deeply honored and grateful to have been given the opportunity to lead the chapter this year. Our chapter continues to shine with our dedicated volunteers and innovative ideas. I am proud to say we don’t rest on our laurels and instead strive to do more. The REstart program was an example of this dedication this year.

Congratulations to our incoming President, Melissa Steele, CPM®! She has provided our chapter with her insight and thoughtfulness for several years. I am excited to see what else our chapter will accomplish under her leadership!

Incoming President's Message

by Melissa Steele, CPM®

I hope everyone had as much fun at the November Installation Dinner as I did! I am very excited to serve as your 2020 chapter president and so proud to have an amazing group of friends and leaders on the Executive Council by my side. Congratulations to our amazing group of volunteers who were recognized as our chapter award winners. It’s clear that we have an incredibly engaged group of volunteers in our chapter. If you haven’t had the chance to join a committee or attend our IYP and Community Outreach events, I hope you will in 2020.

We are looking forward to some new and exciting programs that are planned for 2020, beginning with the Industry Forecast Meeting and Trade Show on Wednesday, January 29, 2020 at the Ritz Carlton in Tysons Corner.

Wishing you all a Happy Holiday season!

Community Action

By Jatonne Perrow

Community Action has quite Been busy over the last quarter doing many great things in our area!

Community Action and IYP Committees held their fall combined event on October 30th. Working with Lost Dog and Cat Rescue Foundation once again, they took 10 dogs on a “Dogventure”, enjoying the scenic view of East Falls Church park. After the walk with the dogs, IYP had a wonderful happy hour at Dogfish Head Alehouse watching the Nationals game!

On November 22, we volunteered at Food for Others. This was a great time of year to volunteer as they were slammed with so many donations! IREM volunteers helped by sorting food, breaking down boxes, and disposing of any expired food. This was such a rewarding experience!

Thank you for everyone’s donations to 50/50 this year. With all of your help, we were able to adopt two families from the Fairfax County Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court. We were also able to donate to all of the shelters we volunteered at this year, including The Patrick Henry Shelter House, Food for Others, Women Giving Back, Lost Dog & Cat Foundation and Fairfax County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court (Adopt a Family)! These charities will have a nice holiday gift from IREM Norther Virginia Chapter.

We received several donations from the Toys for Tots drive this year during our Holiday Happy Hour. We made lots of children happy! Thank you everyone who donated. Happy holidays!

Region 3 Education

The Region 3 Education Committee wrapped up the year with its annual transition meeting, where 2019 volunteers turned over their roles to their 2020 counterparts from the participating chapters. 2019 was a very good year for RE3 Education, returning a record profit to the chapters based primarily on the huge success of its executive skill set of professional seminars and its large number of private, corporate offerings.

Region 3 Education is unique in IREM® because of the highly collaborative planning and execution of credentialing courses and professional seminars. Rather than competing against other local chapters for students, RE3 Ed combines volunteers from five of the region’s chapters, who work together to plan a comprehensive calendar. RE3 Ed runs autonomously from the chapters, with its own staff, its own bank account and its own set of leaders and governing documents. The overwhelming success of the committee can be tied directly to the hard work of the chapter volunteers who find no-cost venues, coordinate course logistics such as receiving and distributing course materials, finding sponsors for refreshments, and taking time off from their day jobs to sign in students for the courses. Hats off to these amazing volunteers for their dedication!

The new 2020 course calendar is now available online at irem.org. All local RE3 offerings can be found on the RE3 Education website, here. Professional seminars for 2020 will be announced in early January, with another leadership series on the horizon. Watch your inboxes!
