President's Message

by Melissa Steele, CPM®

Our chapter had a great start to 2020 with a very successful and informative Industry Forecast Meeting in January followed by our February General Membership meeting where Matt Smith from JBG SMITH gave us guidance on “What To Do When The Worst Happens”.  Now as we are all preparing our responses to the COVID-19 outbreak, it seems like the February topic was a good reminder of the importance of communication during crisis.

IREM® offered a free webinar on what property managers need to know during this Coronavirus Outbreak and offered a free Pandemic Guide for Real Estate Managers that can be found from the link on our website.

We had to make the difficult decision to postpone our March General Membership meeting and will monitor the situation as we move into April.  One good telework activity is to submit your Income and Expense Reports to IREM®. We have an April 1st deadline and are hoping to meet our chapter goals for submissions.

I know we are all focused on responding to the challenges that we face over the upcoming weeks and I am confidant that our IREM® family will support each other through this difficult time.

Forecast Meeting Wrap Up

Another auspicious forecast event took place January 29, 2020. Dustin Read moderated our panel of experts: Jeanette Chapman, Scott Homa, Bobby Rassuli, and Noelle Sharbaugh, who gave their expert insight on the direction of the economy in their respective market segments.

Following our panel presentation we held our trademark Trade Show where over 300 industry professionals networked over appetizers and cocktails.

Preparation, Planning, and Implementation – COVID-19*

Pandemic Plans are often a requirement for working with professional commercial real estate and management companies.  A great approach is to implement the plan in early fall just before the influenza season beings.  Check with your janitorial service provider and be certain they instruct teams to clean for influenza by disinfecting “high touch” areas more frequently, being more attentive to disinfecting common areas, conference rooms, and fitness centers. Additionally, stress the importance of safe hand-hygiene and proper coughing and sneezing etiquette. Reinforce this plan with added training after the holiday season for continued protection.

In January 2020, news of the Corona virus was reported from China. The impact was astounding. As of March 13, there are over 1,600 confirmed cases of the COVID-19 in the USA and at least 40 related deaths to date.
