President's Report

by Kasara Williams, CPM®

Our chapter started 2019 with our leadership orientation. New members of the Executive Council learned how our chapter functions in relation to IREM as a whole. We also talked about ways to bring in new members, how to lay out a clear path for members interested in jumping in on the leadership track, as well as how to raise more funds for the charities we support. Our committee chairs are finalizing their goals for the year so we can move forward thoughtfully and make our chapter even better.

Our general membership meeting on March 13 was very insightful. In case you missed it, our speaker, Doug Lotierzo from Neuberger & Co., spoke about corporate social responsibility. He reminded us that if you approach personal interactions with the goal of making it good, you will succeed in achieving your goal. He also talked about how helping people contributes to your own happiness. As property managers, it’s easy to get caught up with what goes wrong in our day, but if we focus on our tenants and clients, we are destined to be happy. His speech was a great segue into our next speaker from DASH, Kuome Ngaaje. She showed us about how her organization puts victims of homelessness and domestic violence back on track to start their lives anew.

The IREM Northeast Regional meeting will be held at the Gaylord in National Harbor this year! We are fortunate to host our fellow IREM members along with Chapters 8 and 92. Our April general membership meeting will be at Bobby McKey’s on April 10 where we will mingle with our out-of-town guests. If you have pre-paid your general membership meetings, it’s included! I look forward to seeing you there.

Forecast Meeting Wrap Up

by Benjamin Underwood, CPM®

The 2019 Industry Forecast and Tradeshow was a great success! Over 200 members had the opportunity to hear what is expected to happen over the coming years from some of the region's most respected professionals. Jeanette Chapman, of The Stephen S. Fuller Institute, gave an overview of the current regional trends, demographics, employment and the real estate market. Following her presentation was a panel of industry experts including Melissa Balkin of Lerner Enterprises, Bobby Rassuli of First Washington and Erik Weinberg of FCP moderated by Todd Pearson of B. F. Saul Company. The panelists shared their perspectives on current trends in each of their respective business segments.

Following the Forecast was an industry tradeshow where we had the chance to hear about the latest innovations that can make building managers' jobs easier and our occupants' lives better. There were numerous prizes given and everyone had a great time! If you didn’t get to attend this year you should take advantage of this great event in 2020!

Legislative Update

by Ryan Underwood

IREM held its annual Capitol Hill Day March 5th and 6th. We interviewed Liz Shanahan, a property manager with Avison Young, who’s had the pleasure of participating in the Fly-In 5 times. Click here to read more about what to expect when you join in next year!

On a legislative note, Congress voted to pass a short-term extension to the National Flood Insurance Program. NFIP provides 90% of all flood insurance nationwide and is critical to our industry. IREM will continue to monitor the issue and to advocate with our coalition partners on a long-term reform and reauthorization bill for NFIP.
