2018 started out very busy at IREM with the roll out of a new logo, tag line, and overall re-branding. Our chapter has already adopted the new logo and we are proud to count ourselves among “Those Who Manage To Make A Difference”.
At our Executive Council meeting in January, officers and committee chairs (and committee members) spent a lot of time brainstorming and discussing our chapter as a whole. We talked about what works, which initiatives need more support, and what we can do to continue to grow bigger, better, and in a smart way. Our committee chairs are finalizing their goals for the year and we continue our focus on promoting diversity within the chapter and creating goals that support our initiatives.
Your feedback is one of the most valuable tools we have to shape our growth, and I invite you to share any ideas you might have by emailing me directly at firstname.lastname@example.org. I would love to hear any suggestions on what we could do better--or comments on what we do right--as we embark on a new year of chapter activities.

The 2018 Regional Industry Forecast and Tradeshow was held on February 1st at the Ritz Carlton in Tysons Corner. This event provided our members with an opportunity to hear about the economic and demographic trends that are facing our industry and what to expect in the coming year. Jeannette Chapman of the Stephen S. Fuller Institute provided the keynote address and then we heard from a panel of real estate experts moderated by Todd Pearson of the B. F. Saul company which included Noelle Sharbaugh of Greystar Real Estate Services, Brigg Bunker of Foulger-Pratt, and John Sikaitis of JLL.
After the presentation, members were invited to join over forty of our industry partners for a trade show where they had the opportunity to learn about the latest and greatest within the industry. Everyone enjoyed the networking, and of course the cocktails and delightful refreshments. For reference, Jeannette’s presentation is available here. If you didn’t have a chance to make it, we look forward to seeing you next year.

For the 4th year in a row, members of our chapter have been selected for the Diversity Scholar Program which recognizes IREM members from underrepresented groups who have demonstrated leadership skills at the chapter level, have an interest in advancing their leadership skills at the national level, and are committed to advancing their careers using IREM resources. Congratulations Jatonne Trianna of Cushman & Wakefield, and Kenicia Thomas of Washington REIT who have been chosen as two of the Diversity Scholars for 2018! They will serve on the national Diversity Advisory Board and representing Chapter 77 at the Global Summit this fall in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Be sure to congratulate them when seeing them at our next General Membership Meeting!
The ACoM (ACCREDITED COMMERCIAL MANAGER) certification shows employers and clients that you’re passionate about commercial management, and have the credibility and expertise to back up that passion.
How do you get it?
Earn the ACoM by meeting requirements including education, examination, ethics, and experience. The convenient ACoM Track offers the chance to fulfill the first three of those.
- Commercial managers newer to the profession and aspiring to take the next step in their careers, and gain control over their future.
- Young professionals
- Professionals of any age ready to put distance between themselves and their competitors
Some commercial managers have a job. Commercial managers who hold the ACoM have a career. IREM stands proudly with, and lends its full strength and support to, every ACoM member as they advance through the profession.

Region 3 education is already off to a strong start. The seminars in particular are very successful.
Our Excel seminar was such a draw that we had to add two additional sessions – all of which sold out. In addition, we had a very successful Maintenance for Residential Managers seminar, which had more than 50 attendees, and we are slated to have 40 attendees at the Public Speaking & Professional Presence Seminar. We are currently looking to add Customer Service to the already full seminar schedule for this year.
Check out our Region 3 Education website for our seminar and course offerings and to register here!

If you have not had the pleasure of meeting Neil Werner, it’s only a matter of time! This year he is one of our greeters at general membership meetings. He is also on the Education Committee and works with Sharron Howard on course delivery. Additionally, Neil is part of the Next-Gen CPM Leaders program through IREM HQ. As an employee of an AMO firm, he was selected from fellow high performing Cushman & Wakefield employees under 35 to earn a CPM designation in 2 years and receive additional leadership training. He is active in Cushman & Wakefield’s future leader program as well.
Neil was recently promoted to Property Manager and manages 2 office buildings: 4401 N. Fairfax Drive in Arlington and 1421 Prince Street in Alexandria. He started out in residential property management after graduating from Virginia Tech’s property management program. Growing up in Richmond, Neil was exposed to real estate as a career by his father who is a general contractor. His involvement in IREM started early; he was a member of Chapter 38 while in college. Thanks to former chapter president, Charlotte Wilson, Chapter 77 got him back into IREM after he moved to northern Virginia!
Neil lives in Alexandria with his fiancé and dog. When he is not getting ready for his wedding next March in Leesburg, he plays volleyball and follows Hokies football. He is also appreciative of the support he receives from friends and family for all his endeavors and loves Excel, like all property managers!
